Fiji Blue Fishing: advancing the project’s second year of action

An intensive week of meetings, workshops and coordination activities for the Open Plan Consulting team in Suva, Fiji, marking the beginning of the Fiji Blue Fishing project’s second year of implementation.

The mission focused on working with LMMA partners to define the Action Plan for the second year of the Fiji Blue Fishing Project, review the implementation of ongoing activities, and address administrative, financial and procurement aspects. Meetings with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Fisheries, the European Union Delegation and actors at Suva Market, also provided an opportunity to strengthen institutional cooperation and assess the feasibility of planned pilot actions, including the photovoltaic ice-maker plant and plastic storage system.

The next phase of the Fiji Blue Fishing project will further develop capacity building and the project’s technical activities, including the Life Cycle Assessment of the fishery value chain, practical solutions for waste reduction and fish by-product valorisation, sustainable packaging, renewable-energy applications and improved preservation of catches. The project will also continue working with fishing communities through Fiji’s traditional iTaukei governance structures, involving traditional leaders, village committees, women’s groups and other community actors.

Through this work, Fiji Blue Fishing aims to strengthen practical cooperation and knowledge exchange between European and Pacific partners, supporting more sustainable and circular fishery value chains in Fiji.
